The living room
Room by room
When you come and see it, this is the house you will be standing in.
The bedrooms
Furnished and shared. Every resident gets a bed, storage that is theirs, and somewhere secure for documents and medication. Rooms are matched by us rather than by who asked first, and they can be changed if the match is wrong.
The kitchen
Fully equipped, and residents cook in it. Standing next to somebody chopping onions is where a lot of the real conversation in a sober house actually happens.
The bathrooms
Two full bathrooms, on a morning rotation that goes up on the fridge, cleaned daily by the people who use them.
Outside
Shade, chairs, and the only place anyone smokes. It is where the evening tends to end up. The gate is not locked. This is voluntary housing and you can leave at any time.
Household expectations
Structured and respectful. Short list, no small print.
Every resident goes through these out loud before moving in, and signs a house agreement covering them. They are the same for everybody.
- Stay sober. No alcohol or non-prescribed drugs, on the property or off it
- No violence, no threats, no weapons
- Be working, actively looking for work, or in a program
- Keep your own recovery program going, whatever it is
- Chores done on your day, and the shared spaces left as you found them
- Curfew kept, and guests only in the times and places the house allows
- Random drug and alcohol testing, which you consent to in the house agreement
- Rent paid on time
- What is said in the house stays in the house
What to bring

- Clothes, and shoes you can work in
- Photo ID
- Any prescribed medication, in the original labeled bottles
- Your phone and charger
- Contact details for your case manager, sponsor, probation officer or outpatient program
- Any paperwork from where you have just been
Taft, California
Quiet, and far enough out that the old phone numbers stop working.
Taft sits in the southwest corner of Kern County, about forty minutes from Bakersfield. Far enough that dropping in on the wrong person takes planning, close enough that work, meetings, courts and county services are all reachable.
We do not publish the street address. People live here, and several of them are working hard not to be found by particular other people. You get the address when you are coming.
